8.2 AFS File Storage

8.2.1 Overview

The AFS distributed file system provides users with convenient data sharing and access within the local computing environment. The computing platform offers each user a personal AFS workspace for file editing and data read/write operations. In addition, AFS provides large-capacity public and software volumes for accessing shared software resources, ensuring the proper execution of cluster jobs.

8.2.2 AFS Volume Overview

User Volumes

The AFS system currently hosts more than 2,000 user volumes, providing data storage and sharing services. After successful login, users are directed to their home directory by default. Each user is allocated 500 MB of storage space in their personal AFS home directory.

Path: /afs/ihep.ac.cn/users/a-z/username

Software Volumes

The AFS system currently provides 13 software volumes to support different experimental environments. Details are shown in Table 2:

Path Volume Size (KB) Description
/afs/ihep.ac.cn/bes3/gpupwa bes3.gpupwa 2048000 GPU-related software libraries
/afs/ihep.ac.cn/bes3/offline offline.bes3 150000000 Offline data for BES3 experiments
/afs/ihep.ac.cn/bes3/offline/Boss offline.boss 150000000 Offline data for BOSS experiments
/afs/ihep.ac.cn/bes3/offline/CalibConst offline.calibconst 50000000 Calibration constants data
/afs/ihep.ac.cn/bes3/offline/ExternalLib offline.externallib 102400000 External libraries for BES3
/afs/ihep.ac.cn/soft/CMS soft.cms 5000000 CMS software environment

/afs/ihep.ac.cn/soft/YBJ soft.YBJ 10000000 YBJ software environment

Table 2: AFS Software Volume Overview

Public Volume

The AFS system provides one public volume for shared software and scripts on the computing platform. Details are shown in Table 3:

Path Volume Size (KB) Description
/afs/ihep.ac.cn/soft/common soft.common 200000000 Shared scripts and common software

8.2.3 AFS File System Commands

In addition to standard file and directory operations, AFS provides specific commands for managing access control and storage.

1. Set directory access permissions

fs setacl -dir directory -acl user/group rl/all/none

Example:

$ fs setacl -dir /afs/ihep.ac.cn/users/h/huangql/mydir -acl huqb all
$ fs setacl -dir /afs/ihep.ac.cn/users/h/huangql/mydir -acl system:anyuser none

2. View directory access permissions

fs listacl -path directory

Example:

$ fs listacl -path /afs/ihep.ac.cn/users/h/huangql/mydir

3. Check directory quota

fs listquota [-path <dir/file path>+] [-help]

Example:

$ fs listquota /afs/ihep.ac.cn/users/h/huangql/mydir

4. Check AFS user space usage

fs quota [-path <dir/file path>+] [-help]

Example:

$ fs quota /afs/ihep.ac.cn/users/h/huangql

5. Obtain user permissions

If a user does not have access to files in their directory, they can acquire permissions using:

$ kinit username
Password:
$ aklog -d

8.2.4 SSH Key-Based Passwordless Login Setup

1. Generate SSH key locally

$ ssh-keygen
$ ls ~/.ssh/

2. Configure on the server

Create the .ssh directory in the home directory and add the public key:

$ mkdir ~/.ssh
$ echo public_key_string >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys

3. Configure AFS permissions

$ fs listacl -path ~/.ssh
$ fs setacl -path ~/.ssh system:anyuser l

4. Create public directory and adjust permissions

$ mkdir ~/public
$ fs setacl -path ~/public system:anyuser rl

$ mv ~/.ssh/authorized_keys ~/public/
$ mv ~/.ssh/known_hosts ~/public/

$ ln -s ~/public/authorized_keys ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
$ ln -s ~/public/known_hosts ~/.ssh/known_hosts
