8.7 Backup Service¶
8.7.1 Service Overview¶
Data backup protects important data before failures occur. IHEP currently uses the open-source Amanda backup software. Amanda is a network backup system developed by the University of Maryland. It supports both full backup and incremental backup, transferring data that needs to be protected from the computing environment to backup servers through the network.
Backup policies are designed according to data size, data type, and backup frequency.
8.7.2 Backup Application¶
If data needs to be backed up, first complete the backup application form. The form can be downloaded from Backup Application Form.
After filling in the form, send it to the Computing Center unified service mailbox helpdesk@ihep.ac.cn or the computing service mailbox ihep_computing_service@ihep.ac.cn.
8.7.3 Backup Policies¶
| Level | Policy | Medium |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Full backup once per day | Disk |
| 2 | Full backup once per week and incremental backup once per day | Disk |
| 3 | Full backup once per week | Disk |
| 4 | Full backup once per month and incremental backup once per day | Disk |
| 5 | Full backup once per month and incremental backup once per week | Disk |
| 6 | One full backup, retained long term | Tape |
8.7.4 Backup Directories¶
Only directories listed below are backed up. Data outside the list is not backed up.
| Application | Directory | Backup policy |
|---|---|---|
| BES | /besfs5/homebes | Daily backup; data can be restored within one month |
| BSRF | /home/bsrf | Daily backup; data can be restored within two weeks |
| LHC | /home/lhc | Daily backup; data can be restored within two weeks |
| CC | /home/cc | Daily backup; data can be restored within two weeks |
| ATLAS | /afs/ihep.ac.cn/soft/atlas | Weekly backup; data can be restored within one month |
| CMS | /afs/ihep.ac.cn/soft/CMS | Weekly backup; data can be restored within one month |
| Public directory | /afs/ihep.ac.cn/users | Daily backup; data can be restored within two weeks |
| Public directory | /workfs2 | Daily backup; data can be restored within one month |
8.7.5 Amanda Backup Client Installation¶
- Create the
amandabackupuser:
Set the user shell to /bin/sh and home directory to /var/lib/amanda.
-
Install the Amanda client package.
-
Check
/etc/xinetd.d/amandaclient:
service amanda
{
disable = no
socket_type = stream
protocol = tcp
wait = no
user = amandabackup
group = disk
groups = yes
server = /usr/libexec/amanda/amandad
server_args = -auth=bsdtcp amdump
}
- Restart
xinetd:
- As the
amandabackupuser, edit/var/lib/amanda/.amandahostsand add the backup servers:
bak01.ihep.ac.cn amandabackup amdump
bak02.ihep.ac.cn amandabackup amdump
bak03.ihep.ac.cn amandabackup amdump
bak04.ihep.ac.cn amandabackup amdump
bak05.ihep.ac.cn amandabackup amdump
bak06.ihep.ac.cn amandabackup amdump
bak07.ihep.ac.cn amandabackup amdump
bak08.ihep.ac.cn amandabackup amdump
chmod 700 /var/lib/amanda/.amandahosts
-
Adjust firewall rules and inform the system administrator of the machine and directories to be backed up.
-
Configure recovery support:
Create /etc/amanda/amanda-client.conf as amandabackup and configure conf, index_server, tape_server, and auth according to administrator instructions.
8.7.6 Amanda Data Recovery¶
Restore files in a temporary directory such as /tmp to avoid overwriting files with the same name. Recovery must be performed on the client machine as root.
Example workflow:
# cd /tmp
# amrecover Dailyset
amrecover> listdisk
amrecover> setdisk /var/www/html
amrecover> ls
amrecover> cd tar-1.15
amrecover> add scripts/
amrecover> add configure
amrecover> add doc/
amrecover> lcd /tmp
amrecover> extract
amrecover> quit
Common amrecover commands:
amrecover> listdisk
amrecover> setdisk
amrecover> setdate YYYY-MM-DD
amrecover> add item1 item2
amrecover> addx item1 item2
amrecover> lpwd
amrecover> lcd path
amrecover> extract
If setdisk reports that there are no index records for the specified date, contact the administrator immediately.
